Don’t you love it when you enter inside a space that evokes cleanliness and serenity? Doesn’t it feel soothing and invigorating when you are immersed in a milieu of vibrant fresh colors?

Well, fear not. There is always a way to bring that fresh vibrancy into your home or office, all you need to do is learn how to choose your color palette to bring that freshness indoors.

So here is a fool-proof way on how to select vibrant fresh colors for any living or working environment:

  • Understand the source of your most dominant lighting, are you most utilizing natural sunlight, or using artificial lighting, such as halogen or incandescent as your dominant source?

Your lighting changes the way any color is seen and viewed. Different perceptions of color shades occur due to different lighting sources and types of lighting we are using, as our eyes detect subtle differences in color due to the lighting. For example, in the photo of this post natural lighting is incorporated via large windows. Natural light creates greater vibrancy.

  • If you are using natural lighting as your main source, understand the compass direction of where the natural light exposure source is being directed from. Is this western exposure, eastern exposure, or some hybrid direction exposure such as north-western, or south-eastern?

Where are your windows located (do you even have windows?)? Western or eastern exposure will play a vital role in how color will be perceived during various times of the day. Obviously the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so if you wish to have greater vibrancy of color in the morning hours, then having eastern exposure windows or doors would be best. If you have western exposure windows or doors and you love the beautiful hues of dusk, then your greatest vibrancy of rich colors will occur  during the late afternoons and early evening.

  • Learn and know your “color temperatures” and how they match or compliment one another.

Are the main items i.e., furniture, flooring, etc. cool, warm, or neutral in color temperature? “Cool” color examples would be ice blue, sea foam green, light grey, and brushed nickel, while examples of “warm” colors would be medium brown, burgundy, terracotta, taupe, alabaster, and hunter green.  “Neutral” color examples would be grey, off white, beige, while back and white are “non-colors”.

  • Choose “splashes” of bold color statements in small items that “float” over a neutral background.

Not only will this color selecting strategy create more eye-catching “pop” in your room, it will also give you greater flexibility to rotate or “change out” those items for a different color feel whenever you feel the room needs an update. This will prevent you from ever growing tired of your overall room color scheme.  A good example of this strategy in play are the two colorful wall plates placed over the light taupe background in the photo of this post.

I certainly hope you received value from this post on how to select vibrant fresh colors for any room setting.
